Turbidity measurement refers to measuring the degree to which water becomes opaque due to the presence of suspended particles in the water. The turbidity of water is calculated based on the amount of light scattered by particles in the water. The more suspended solids in water, the more turbid the water becomes, and the higher the turbidity of the water. Turbidity measurement is a recognized method for ensuring water quality.

The suspended solids sensor STSS-MLSS is an optical device that operates in the infrared range. Unlike turbidity sensors that use 90 degree scattered light, it uses "backscatter" technology to optimize sensitivity, allowing for the measurement of higher concentration values. The use of infrared light source not only prolongs the lifespan of the sensor, but also reduces the influence of sample color on measurement.
